First off, the new look. If you've been a regular visitor, you're probably really surprised! I have to thank E.E. and Paula for inadvertently inspiring me to change the look of the page. E.E. wanted to make her blog look more like a scrapbook and that same morning I had been in touch with Paula - scrapper extraordinaire - who sent me the link to her family's blog. In the top left you'll find the secret. Thecutestblogontheblock.com has many hints, addons and backgrounds to improving the look of a blog or even other social networking sites such as Facebook. If you're a blogger with a creative streak, I do hope you'll check it out.
Len and I got new phones with new capabilities so we're trying them out. Here's Emily playing with one of her new toys.
Feeding Emily:
Next up, Emily is in her second week of eating solids. I'm in the process of looking up ideas for a feeding schedule. Dr. Williams gave us a brilliant suggestion - meal planning by colors! I think I can handle that. Only...how many yellow veggies are out there? And do we continue feeding her the rice cereal? How do we know if we're feeding her too much? Answers to these and more will be on my agenda for the afternoon.
In other eating news, we have stopped the breastfeeding. For various reasons, but mostly being the time factor. I was starting to dry up, as it were and getting so little out, it just made more sense to go completely to formula so I can devote those former pumping hours to working.
some short term plans:
In the last two weeks, (and this week), Emily has been going to babysitters so I could get some alone time to actually DO some work. It has worked out nicely and Len and I are starting to consider a permanent baby-care solution. This summer, one of the girls from the church might be retained and for the fall, my cousin, Les, is an in-home childcare provider so I'm looking forward to Emily getting to know her. So wish us luck as we make those decisions.
Growing closer to family: a short reflection
During my surgery, my cousin Debi came to see us and these past weeks, Emily spending time with my cousin has brought to light all that I missed out on while Britt, Les's daughter, was growing up. Britt is graduating high school this year and every time I see her, I'm just completely struck at how brilliant she is. (Must run in the family - hehehehe). Plus, Les remarried several years ago and I've almost ignored my new family members. Our families are so close in proximity and yet...in fact, I know more about Len's blood relations than my own. I guess becoming a parent makes you realize where you have fallen short in your social skills. Expecting others to create and maintain a relationship for you is a little ridiculous. I certainly don't want this to be the case for Emily. With things being so crazy in the world, I think making the minimal effort to contact your family is worth the time.So here's hoping that the future holds more family get togethers! I really encourage others to do the same. If your family seems like a nightmare, perhaps you could look for something that YOU can do to bridge the gap.
