Our Big Fat Orange Cat

Hadji, Hadjers, Hodgepodge, The Hadj-Man, Stupid Cat, Hadjers Dogers and the 24th and a half Century!
All these names referred to our sweet and loving kitty who we had to say good-bye to today.

I picked him up on the side of the road after my car had broken down and he kept me company until my rescue came. I gave him to Len so they could keep each other out of trouble in South Carolina in 1998. Hadji was probably a year old, or close to it. Len tells me often of how he slept in his cat box for the first weeks and chased bugs that came in under the door. He would lay on the floor in front of his food bowl and scoop the food out onto the floor to eat it. He played in his water bowl making many many messes.

He liked catnip mice, fishing pole things, and tinkle balls rolling down the stairs. He hated car rides. Loved to cuddle and had a squeaky meow. He could fetch and shake hands as well as give kisses. He liked to play tag around corners and chew speaker cables. He especially loved to annoy Meg, our other cat before she passed.

And yes, I even had a cuddling song for Hadji. I'll be happy to sing it again upon request, but here are the lyrics.
"I've got the Hadjers, such the happy Hadjers, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ."
(Hadji's part after the big cuddle at the end.) *SQUEAK*

He was very tolerant of Emily and Elizabeth's first attempts at learning to pet gently.  Even more tolerant of when Emily was learning to stand and used him as a hand hold, but nothing beats her excited episode of grabbing up two handfuls of the fur along his back and screeching loudly. He was the very best family kitty.

One of my favorite memories was during my mother's house renovations. Hadji had gotten down into the air ducts from the second floor. He got stuck when he fell down the shaft. We didn't really know who to call, so we started with the fire department. It must have been a slow day because three heroes came out to open the air duct and let out a very scared, but unharmed Hadji.

We loved you, buddy and hope you were always a happy happy Hadjers.
