2011 Starts With a Bang

You'd think I'd learn by now not to bombard you guys with posts loaded with media....yeah well, today is not that day. Just enjoy!
Here's Em pictured, just today, in her Dora sunglasses. She was so excited to go play on the swings after lunch...but fell asleep on the way home. I think she kind of resembles Elton John in them...especially with those flower-power pants.

Dreary Weather
On our first clear day after all that snow, ice, and whatever else God was throwing at the unprepared Georgians, Emily and I went out for a little walk. I thought it was time she learned how much fun it was to splash in puddles....took me forever to get her back indoors. (I later learned how much fun it was to dry out, rewash, and re-dry toddler sneakers.)

The Obstacle Course
I always wondered what stay-at-home mommies do all day. Besides attempting to keep the laundry/dishes/etc. under control, Emily and I built this:
After taking the video, I thought it'd be a good idea to add a "through" portion. By the time Mommy finds a box appropriate enough, Emily has HAD enough...ah well.

What makes the 2nd picture so special? Well, Len has been working on Em's construction skills. It finally paid off on the first hurdle of this construction. See those extra struts on top there? Emily added those for more stability. I had absolutely nothing to do with it! You'll notice they aren't there in the video.

First professional haircut by herself (by Ms. S. Keane)
She enjoyed it very much and is still talking about her "Hair. Cut. Su-san!" Yes, that is an official sentence. She cracks me up with the stuff that comes from her mouth. It's been about a month and she's due for another cut. Hopefully I can work it in before baby sister gets here.

Playdates with Jaime, Kylan & Jayden
We had Jaime over on a couple of occasions. For me it was helpful to see how Emily would react to a younger sibling. She's pretty good, but gets distracted easily and doesn't watch where she's walking or slinging toys around. Her sharing skills are wonderful and she does like to show affection by giving hugs or kisses or compliments.
Kylan came over with baby brother, Jayden, and daddy, Shane. We took them to scope out the playground in the neighborhood. Now, Emily asks to go play with Kylan specifically.

Kangaroo Jakes Indoor Playground with Phillips girls
I believe it was...MLK day I think, and most of C'ville was still in ice. I called around to find another indoor playground. This place was in Rome and I highly recommend it. There were at least 10 LARGE inflatables besides the two toddler only ones, snackbar, video games, and comfy chairs for tired moms and dads. There are other amenities, but check it out for yourself. Reasonably priced too. Of course, all Emily wanted to do was sit in the mechanical car or throw herself repeatedly into the bouncy surfaces.

Lastly, a conversation we had with Emily today went this way:
Dad: Emily, what sound does a duck make?
Em: Quack, quack
Dad: What sound does a lion make?
Em: Rawr
Dad: What sound does Hadjers (our cat) make when you grab his tail?
Em: Let Go.
It kept me laughing all day.

Emily and Elizabeth

I get asked on how Emily is taking the changes with a new baby on the way. So far, so good. Len and I are taking what steps we can. Emily has long transferred from her crib to a toddler bed w/o rails. Likewise, her highchair has been traded in for a big person chair. (This one has caused a little setback, she needs to sit on her knees and they keep getting bruised. We plan on adding a cushion of some sort.)

I try to bring up Elizabeth daily in our conversations such as:
"Emily, are you going to teach Elizabeth how to brush her teeth/use a fork/give hugs/etc.", "Emily, are you excited about Elizabeth coming/your new little sister?"

Or, we play identifying games where she will point to the person. "Where Emily?" (points to her chest) "Where's Mommy?" (points to my face) "Where's Elizabeth?" (points to my belly).

Some precious moments are when she runs up to give my belly a hug or uses her doctor kit to listen to my belly. Last week we, I should say SHE, picked out Elizabeth's scrapbook. We walked up and down the aisle at Hobby Lobby. I pointed to a few and she shook her head. Then Emily started pointing to one from the cart seat. It took me a few times to get it right, but she was patient with me, constantly repeating "Liz-beth Book!" (imagine her little voice going up two octaves per syllable.)

We know it'll be difficult for Em because she's used to getting all the attention, but hoping for the best that she'll be a caring big sister. We try to reinforce this by emphasizing that she's a "little (or big) girl" now and not a "baby" as in 'Babies don't get to play. They just sleep or lay down all the time." It seems to be taking because she negated us one day on a slip of the tongue by calling her a 'sweet baby'. She's says "No! Big Girl!" So I laughed and gave our Big Girl a big hug.

As for the baby, Elizabeth was a little camera shy at our last ultrasound, so I apologize for not having new pictures for you. She's kicking up a storm and seems to want nothing but spicy and salty foods during this last month. That's fine with mommy just so long as I don't have to eat mushrooms! :)
